CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has taken a significant step towards addressing violence against transgender women in the city by signing Executive Order 2024-2. This order establishes a Transfemicide Working Group, which will develop comprehensive strategies to protect and uplift the trans community.

Mayor Johnson emphasized the importance of this Working Group in his commitment to implementing community safety approaches that address the root causes of violence and ensure the safety of all residents. The Working Group will be convened by February 28, 2025, by the Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations in collaboration with the Chicago Police Department. It will include representatives from various departments across the city to review and recommend policies, procedures, training, and directives that can bring about positive change within the BIPOC transgender and gender-diverse community.

Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa from the 35th Ward expressed his gratitude towards Mayor Johnson's administration for taking this important step. He stated, "We are sincerely grateful to Mayor Johnson's Administration for the commitment to establish the Transfemicide Working Group through an official Executive Order 2024-2. This is a big step forward to ensure our city government understands the unique challenges facing our transgender neighbors in Chicago."

The Working Group will also work closely with LGBTQ community members and stakeholders, including the LGBTQ Advisory Council, to inform their efforts and ensure a comprehensive approach to addressing violence against transgender women.
