...and Somehow Manages to Stay Out of an Italian Run Jail...
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - May 20, 2019 - illiNews -- Today is the launch of NM CANNA Group, LLC. It is a cannabis consultancy dedicated to improving the cannabis operations for businesses, as well the cannabis experience for consumers. The company was started after Dan Monticelli presented Cannabis: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, as part of an international workshop entitled: Recovery Model: Una Prospettiva Di Intervento Integrato Bio-Psico_Sociale to a group of psychiatrists, doctors and medical students at the prestigious Clinica Medica auditorium at the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. "A colleague was originally asked to present information on a successful behavioral health recovery program he was running in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During the course of conversation, he mentioned my expertise in the area of the cannabis industry and the workshop organizer asked if I would be interested in presenting on the topic of cannabis. Since we just released a book entitled New Paths to Recovery: Behavioral, Physical and Spiritual Potentials for Cannabis, coauthored by Doctor Geneva Thompson and Doctor Marcello Maviglia, I decided to go for a week and combine the workshop with a visit afterwards to family that I have in the area of Cassino, Italy.
"We will be Watching." The day before the presentation, I went to meet the professor who organized the event, along with Dr. Maviglia, who was also presenting. When I got to the office, there was another gentleman who introduced himself as being from the Finance Police (Guardia di Finanza). They are a military organization under the control of the Minister of Economy and Finance and share responsibilities for investigating smuggling and international drug trafficking activities. He had a lot of questions and concerns about my presentation and wanted to know what I was going to say about cannabis in my talk. After about 30 minutes of going back and forth with various doctors, professors and myself, he concluded by saying that his people would be in the audience but we would not know who they were but that they would be there. One professor then asked me what my favorite fruit was and I said oranges, why? He said that it is customary to bring fruit to a newly sentenced prisoner in Italy. The professor who organized the workshop took those who were going to present to lunch and started referring to me from that point on as American Boy." He would say, "Don't worry, (about the speech), American Boy, you get fresh fruit in an Italian jail…"

The presentation was scheduled for Wednesday, November 14, 2018 from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM. It was supposed to provide each presenter with a hour of presentation time and then end with a 1 hour panel question and answer session. "I was scheduled as the third presenter. I started my presentation talking a little about New Mexico, where I lived, and discussed the current state of The Affordable Care Act and the healthcare industry in the United States. Being a compliance officer for a healthcare company, the topic was appropriate for me to present to the audience. I then spoke about cannabis. I got about halfway through the cannabis presentation and could tell there was some discussion going on in the hallway. I was asked to quickly wrap up the presentation right before I was going to talk about the spiritual development potentials of cannabis. Apparently the subject matter was starting to create a buzz… All in all, the presentation was well received; I provided a very descriptive disclaimer on my intentions regarding the presentation of cannabis at the beginning of the talk, which I hoped would keep me out of jail. I did, coincidentally, get selected for additional, more intensive, security screening at the airport when departing Rome."
"I love Italy but was Glad to be back in the USA"
"Overall it was a great experience. I met interesting people, presented information to medical professionals detailing how research shows that cannabis is not a Gateway Drug and described the propaganda that pushed illegalization in the United States, ate some great food and reconnected with relatives. Mission accomplished. I have to say that the most surprising part of the experience was the concern by government officials over simply discussing cannabis in an open forum. It shows that it is still a powerfully controversial topic and I was reminded how fortunate we are in the United States to be able to openly discuss any topic without someone threatening jail as a possible consequence. I tip my hat to the University of Rome to allow such a discourse to occur as part of their medical education process. It shows a true commitment to knowledge. I told the representative from the Finance Industry that as he was responsible for the safety of the Italian citizens and that back in the USA, I was a compliance officer for a healthcare company and I was responsible to protect our members and company, so we were on common ground. I also said that while his approach was law enforcement, the physician's approach was research and academic and my approach was one of spirituality and belief and that our goals should be one and the same – the ongoing pursuit and dissemination of the truth."
