CHICAGO ~ # Chicago Expands CARE Crisis Response Into Evening Hours
Chicago's Crisis Assistance Response and Engagement (CARE) program will extend its weekday operating hours to 10 p.m., Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Public Health announced.
A second shift is scheduled to begin Oct. 5. During its first week, evening staff will learn their assigned service areas and community resources before responding to eligible 911 calls starting Oct. 12. The program will operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday.
CARE sends behavioral health professionals and emergency medical technicians to eligible 911 calls involving mental health crises or socio-emotional distress. Calls are screened to determine whether a response is appropriate. Eligible situations must be nonviolent and nonmedical, with no active threat to the person or others.

Teams can provide crisis intervention, mental health assessments and basic medical support, as well as connect residents with behavioral health and social services. When appropriate, they may also transport people to community-based care.
The expansion follows a citywide rollout in May that made CARE available in every Chicago community and broadened eligibility. CARE responses to 911 calls rose 51% from May through August compared with January through April, according to the city.
The program is administered by CDPH and is now fully staffed for citywide operations, with eight teams and dedicated capacity for non-emergency responses.
Johnson said the added hours would allow more residents in crisis to receive support from trained behavioral health professionals. Deputy Mayor Arturo Carrillo said the evening shift builds on the city's efforts to expand staffing and connect residents with ongoing care.
Residents can call 911 and request CARE. Chicagoans may also request a non-emergency, clinician-only response by emailing CAREprogram@CityofChicago.org. The city says teams respond to those requests within 24 to 72 hours.
