CHICAGO ~ # Chicago Opens 51 Affordable Homes in Back of the Yards
Chicago officials and development partners have opened United Yards 1A, a 100% affordable housing development at 4703 S. Justine St. in Back of the Yards.
Mayor Brandon Johnson, 20th Ward Ald. Jeannette Taylor, Department of Housing Commissioner Lissette Castañeda and representatives of the Chicago Community Trust, Celadon Partners and the Blackwood Group joined new residents for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The $46 million project adds 51 apartments: 17 one-bedroom, 19 two-bedroom and 15 three-bedroom homes. They are designated for households earning 15% to 80% of the area median income. Twelve apartments receive support from the Chicago Low-Income Housing Trust Fund and are intended for households earning 15% or 30% of area median income.

The development also includes retail space planned with local businesses in mind, along with community facilities such as a technology training and business support center for young entrepreneurs.
United Yards 1A is the second of three phases in a broader development intended to bring investment to vacant and underused sites in the neighborhood. The city contributed up to $25 million in tax-exempt bonds, about $14.5 million in tax increment financing and Chicago Recovery Plan resources.
Castañeda said the project is intended to help neighborhood workers remain in the community as it grows. Johnson said the city would continue investing in affordable housing alongside services and amenities that support families.
The project is part of the mayor's Build Better Together initiative. The administration says its housing investments are intended to help Chicago reach 10,000 newly built or rehabilitated affordable homes by the end of Johnson's first term.
