Mandela witnessed the world of professional sports while helping manage the career of his younger brother, Jerome "Junkyard Dog" Williams, a former NBA player whose relentless energy and commitment made him a fan favorite. That experience gave him access to professional athletes, executives, entertainers, institutions, and the machinery surrounding achievement.

At the same time, Mandela remained deeply connected to young people growing up inside communities shaped by poverty, displacement, social agendas, violence, institutional neglect, and gentrification. These forces were often so carefully structured that they became nearly invisible to the people living inside them.

Mandela occupied a rare position. He could enter those environments, listen to the people living within them, recognize the patterns shaping their choices, and then step outside with enough distance to see what the system tried to conceal.
