CHICAGO ~ Chicago's Midway International Airport has added a new taste of the city to its expansive concessions program with the opening of The Original Mr. Beef. Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with representatives from the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), SSP America, and Midway Partnership, gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the arrival of this iconic Chicago eatery.
Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement for bringing a local favorite to the airport, stating, "Mr. Beef is a Chicago institution, and I'm proud to welcome that local flavor to our Southwest Side airport." He also highlighted the significance of investing in small, local businesses that have been feeding the city for decades.
CDA Commissioner Michael J. McMurray echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the opening of Mr. Beef not only adds to Midway's food options but also creates job opportunities for residents from all over Chicago.
The Original Mr. Beef at Midway offers travelers a taste of its famous hot Italian beef sandwiches, as well as other menu items such as Italian sausage and deli subs. The original location on Orleans Street has been serving up these delicious sandwiches since 1979.

The team behind Mr. Beef expressed their gratitude for the support they have received from both locals and visitors over the years. They are honored to continue serving their signature dish and being a part of Chicago's rich food culture.
SSP America CEO George Mboya also shared his excitement about bringing this iconic Chicago brand to Midway in partnership with CDA and Midway Partnership. He stated that this addition aligns with their goal of elevating the passenger experience while also making a meaningful impact on the city.
Shawnta Young, General Manager of Midway Partnership, highlighted how Mr. Beef is just one example of showcasing an unmistakably Chicago sense of place at Midway through a mix of great local brands and talented employees from the community.
This opening marks another milestone in Midway's recent developments, including the revamped Central Market featuring local brands like Reilly's Daughter and the airport's first shared-use lounge, The Club MDW. Other new retail openings include Fannie May, Hudson, Chicago Sports, and Johnston & Murphy. Additionally, Gameway, Chicago's first airport video gaming lounge, opened last month.
Since 2017, Midway Partnership has invested over $75 million in the airport, expanding the total concessions area and doubling job opportunities for locals. This investment is part of the $400 million Midway Modernization Program, which has been the most comprehensive upgrade to Midway's facilities in over two decades.
The Original Mr. Beef at Midway is located near Gate B14 and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Travelers can now enjoy a taste of Chicago's iconic Italian beef sandwich while passing through Midway International Airport.
