Mud Morganfield Bares His Soul on 7" Single, 'Deep Gospel'

CHICAGO & LANCASTER, Pa. - illiNews -- As September draws to a close, Nola Blue Records honors Gospel Music Heritage Month — first designated by Congress in 2008 to celebrate gospel music's contributions to American culture — with the announcement of Deep Gospel, a 7" vinyl single from Mud Morganfield. Gospel music speaks across cultural, religious and geographic boundaries with a message of faith, love and hope.

Drawn from a deeply personal place within Mud's soul, Deep Gospel fuses blues and gospel into music filled with passion, faith and emotion, revealing the spiritual heart of the blues and the timeless bond between the two traditions. On his acclaimed 2025 album Deep Mud, Morganfield's songwriting turned increasingly personal, most movingly on "A Dream Walking," a tribute to his late mother. The new 7" vinyl pairs that song with "Praise Him," his testimony to God's grace, in a collectible picture sleeve. Both sides of Deep Gospel speak straight to the heart and soul.

Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, Morganfield is the oldest son of McKinley Morganfield — known to the world as Muddy Waters, the father of Chicago blues. He showed an early interest in drums, and later bass, but didn't pursue music professionally until after his father's passing. A CDL-licensed truck driver by trade, Morganfield came to music full-time later in life. The Blues Music Award-winning vocalist continues to refine his sound, driven to carve out his own chapter of the family's musical legacy.

"This release emerged as a powerful epiphany while discussing the spiritual elements of some of Mud's music," says Sallie Bengtson, president of Nola Blue Records. "With his birthday approaching on September 27 — his second without his mother — Mud has been reflecting on her unwavering love and support, and all she carried him through growing up. This release is a testimony to the power of a mother's love and God's grace in his life."

Deep Gospel vinyl 45s will be available exclusively via Bandcamp and at Morganfield's live shows. The release coincides with his headlining performance at "Blues Masters at the Crossroads," part of Acoustic Sounds' 40th Anniversary Vinyl Summit at the iconic Blue Heaven Studios in Salina, Kansas, on Friday, October 16.
