Naperville: City Reminds Residents to Take Precautions to Reduce Mosquitoes

~ Naperville, IL - The City of Naperville's routine mosquito monitoring and testing program has detected the presence of West Nile Virus in three of its 10 mosquito traps during recent weekly testing. According to the city's press release, a trap on Genesee Drive and a trap at Sportsman's Park off West Street tested positive for the virus during two consecutive weeks in July. Additionally, a trap on Olesen Drive also tested positive for the first time during the week of July 20.

Following these positive test results, City crews took immediate action by treating the affected areas as a precautionary measure. They also conducted thorough inspections for potential mosquito breeding sites and re-treated nearby catch basins.

In order to control the mosquito population in Naperville, City crews regularly inspect and remove standing water where possible. They also treat ponds, marsh areas, and catch basins throughout the city to target mosquitoes in their larval stage. This helps to prevent them from developing into adult mosquitoes. The city also conducts weekly testing on its 10 mosquito traps to evaluate the effectiveness of larval control, provide early warnings when adult populations are rising, and test for West Nile Virus.

If necessary, the City will utilize spraying to control the adult mosquito population. However, they assure that they only use the safest chemicals available in very low volumes and spray only when needed. The city will continue with its weekly trap testing throughout the remainder of summer.

West Nile Virus is a potentially dangerous mosquito-borne virus that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who are infected with this virus do not experience any symptoms or may only have mild symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, skin rash on the trunk of their body, and swollen lymph glands within three to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. However, less than 1% of people infected with West Nile Virus may develop severe illness. Those who are at the highest risk for severe disease are people over the age of 50.

To prevent West Nile disease or any other mosquito-borne illness, the city advises residents to take necessary precautions. These include eliminating stagnant water in birdbaths, ponds, flowerpots, and other receptacles where mosquitoes can breed. It is also recommended to wear protective clothing such as long pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors between dusk and dawn. Applying mosquito repellent containing 25 to 35% DEET is also advised when necessary. Residents are also encouraged to reduce mosquito hiding places by repairing any tears in residential screens and keeping their yards well-maintained.
