~ Naperville, IL- North Aurora Road will be closed for approximately four months starting on Tuesday, March 31st, to allow for utility work related to the North Aurora Road Improvement Project. The closure will affect all traffic in both directions between Pennsbury Lane and Frontenac Road. The road is expected to reopen by the end of July 2026, depending on weather conditions and any unforeseen circumstances.
According to officials, the closure is necessary for various construction activities, including relocating a large gas pipeline and moving ComEd distribution lines that are currently located in the middle of the roadway. Additionally, the road will be reshaped to ensure enough vertical clearance between the road and a temporary railroad bridge. This will allow for continued rail traffic during future stages of the project.
To accommodate motorists during this closure, a detour will be in place directing them to use Diehl Road. Local traffic will still be allowed on North Aurora Road between Route 59 and Frontenac Road, as well as Eola Road and Pennsbury Lane. Access to businesses in the area, such as All Seasons Ice Rink and the Route 59 train station parking lot on the north side of the railroad tracks, will also be maintained. Motorists are advised to use caution while driving in this area and plan for additional travel time due to the detour. They should also follow all posted signs and directions.
The next phase of this project involves constructing a temporary railroad bridge which is expected to begin in late summer 2026. This will result in another closure of North Aurora Road between Pennsbury Lane and Frontenac Road in fall 2026, unless there are any major changes to the timeline. More information about future closures, detours, and traffic impacts will be shared with the public in advance.
The North Aurora Road Improvement Project is a collaborative effort between the City of Naperville, the Naperville Township Road District, and the City of Aurora. It was initiated in 2006 with the goal of reducing traffic congestion and crashes while improving access for bicyclists and pedestrians. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
The current phase of the project, which involves replacing a 110-year-old Canadian National/Wisconsin Central Railroad bridge, is estimated to cost $52 million. External funding sources, including $25 million from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning's Surface Transportation Program (STP) Shared Funding and $15 million from the Illinois Department of Transportation's Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF), will cover $40 million of this cost. The City of Naperville, City of Aurora, and Naperville Township have also invested approximately $6.5 million in easements, land acquisition, engineering, environmental services, and utility coordination.
