CHICAGO - illiNews -- Patented Seat Belt Indicator Light Introduces Externally Visible Approach to Vehicle Seat Belt Awareness
Innovative vehicle safety concept combines exterior indicator lights with seat belt reminder monitoring, logging and communication capabilities
CHICAGO — A patented automotive safety concept known as the Seat Belt Indicator Light offers a new approach to increasing awareness of seat belt status by providing a signal that can be visible from outside a vehicle.
Protected by U.S. Patent No. 10,173,639 B1, the Seat Belt Indicator Light is designed as a supervisory system that monitors a vehicle's seat belt reminder signal while the vehicle is operating.
When a seat belt reminder signal is generated, the system can illuminate externally visible indicator lights. The patented configuration includes left and right visual indicators positioned at the rear of the vehicle, providing an outward indication that a seat belt reminder signal is active.

When the reminder signal is deactivated, the exterior indicator lights turn off.
Beyond the visible warning, the patented system provides additional monitoring capabilities. The technology can maintain logs relating to seat belt reminder activity and, in certain embodiments, use GPS information to record location, date and time associated with that activity.
The patent also provides for local and remote wireless communication of maintained logs, creating additional possibilities for monitoring and reviewing seat belt reminder information.
The concept could have applications across passenger vehicles and other transportation environments, including fleet and commercial vehicle markets where increased visibility and accountability surrounding seat belt use may be valuable.
By building upon a vehicle's existing seat belt reminder signal, the Seat Belt Indicator Light provides a straightforward concept for extending seat belt awareness beyond the interior of the vehicle.
Seat Belt Indicator Light — See Safety. Encourage Compliance.
The patented Seat Belt Indicator Light is currently available for licensing opportunities. Automotive manufacturers, safety technology companies, fleet technology providers and other companies interested in the concept are encouraged to explore potential licensing and commercialization opportunities.
