~ The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has recently announced the launch of their third annual AAOS IDEA Grant Program®. This multi-year initiative aims to promote diversity, equity, and access within the field of orthopaedics. With a total of $300,000 in funding available for 2025, the program hopes to address long-standing disparities in the field and ultimately improve patient care nationwide.

According to Dr. Holly Tyler-Paris Pilson, Chair of the AAOS Diversity Advisory Board, the selected programs will play a crucial role in creating meaningful and measurable opportunities within orthopaedics. She emphasizes that this is not just about meeting diversity quotas, but rather about providing direct funding to local and regional programs that are training current and future orthopaedic professionals.

The AAOS IDEA Grant Program encompasses a wide range of initiatives aimed at supporting a diverse pipeline of individuals pursuing careers in orthopaedics. This includes promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives for both community-based and academic orthopaedic surgeons. The program also seeks to expand access to educational and networking opportunities for diverse students and practicing orthopaedic surgeons. DEI focus areas include gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, socioeconomic status, veteran status, and disability.

The program will be divided into four tracks with different DEI focuses and target recipients. Additional funding from AAOS supporters may also be added to further extend the reach of the initiative.

Grant proposals are now open until June 17th, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. CT. Interested applicants are encouraged to review the evaluation criteria and general application terms on aaos.org/IDEA. Grant recipients will be required to provide an outcomes report at the end of the funding period to measure impact.

To learn more about previous recipients of the IDEA Grant Program or for any inquiries regarding the application process, interested parties can visit aaos.org/IDEA or email the AAOS. The AAOS is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and access within the field of orthopaedics and hopes that this program will serve as a catalyst for positive change within the profession.
