CHICAGO ~ Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with Department of Planning and Development Commissioner Ciere Boatright, Goodman Theatre Executive Director John Collins, co-creators David Byrne and Mala Gaonkar, and other civic and cultural leaders, gathered today to celebrate the debut of Theater of the Mind. This groundbreaking immersive experience was developed by the Goodman Theatre and marks an important milestone in Chicago's growth as a world-renowned destination for theater, music, and cultural innovation.
Theater of the Mind was co-created by Grammy, Academy, and Tony Award-winning musician and artist David Byrne and philanthropist Mala Gaonkar. Their work explores the intersection of neuroscience, storytelling, and human perception. Directed by Andrew Scoville, this unique theatrical experience invites participants through a sequence of rooms designed to engage multiple senses and challenge assumptions about how people understand the world around them.

Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement for this project stating that "projects like this strengthen our city's arts ecosystem while supporting jobs across the creative economy." He also emphasized that this production is a testament to Chicago's continued growth as a cultural hub.
Goodman Theatre Executive Director John Collins also spoke at the event, highlighting The Goodman's century-long history as Chicago's flagship resident theater. He stated that "throughout that time, The Goodman has continuously reinvented itself" and has become known for its award-winning productions that have been exported all over the world. Collins expressed his pride in sharing their latest reinvention with Chicago - Theater of the Mind - which he believes will only add to the city's global reputation for artistry, creativity, and innovation.
The opening night reception was held at Nonnina in River North and welcomed over 100 artists, donors, civic leaders, and cultural partners. This event marked the public debut of Theater of the Mind which embodies the creative leadership of Chicago's cultural community. It is expected to attract audiences from around the world to the city.

The Johnson administration contributed $250,000 to support the project through a Community Development Grant, showcasing the Mayor's commitment to supporting cultural institutions and creative projects that drive economic development while strengthening Chicago's identity as a center for arts and entertainment.
DPD Commissioner Ciere Boatright also spoke at the event, stating that Theater of the Mind will help realize central area revitalization goals by offering immersive and innovative cultural experiences in non-traditional locations. She believes this production is another great reason to come downtown.
