NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Mayor Steve Chirico and the Naperville City Council invite all Naperville high school students to fill student positions on several City boards and commissions and participate in a Leadership Academy.
Applications will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 for students who would like to join one of nearly a dozen City boards and commissions, while simultaneously participating in a Leadership Academy to gain skills that apply to many domains of life. The Leadership Academy will familiarize students with the structure of board and commission meeting protocols, facilitate peer connections and provide the ability to share experiences among fellow Student Representatives. KidsMatter, a Naperville nonprofit organization dedicated to building resilient kids who say "No" to destructive choices and "Yes" to endless possibilities, developed the Leadership Academy to enhance the Student Representative experience.
Students are invited to apply for the following City of Naperville boards and commissions: Financial Advisory Board, Historic Preservation Commission, Human Rights & Fair Housing Commission, Naper Settlement Museum Board, Naperville Public Library Board of Trustees, Planning and Zoning Commission, Public Utilities Advisory Board, Riverwalk Commission, Sister Cities Commission, Special Events & Cultural Amenities Commission and Transportation Advisory Board.

Interested students should apply online by clicking the "Apply" button on the appropriate board or commission webpage. A complete list and description of boards and commissions, as well as their meeting dates and times, is available at www.naperville.il.us/boards. Please note that not all sections of the application apply to students. In lieu of a resume, students may submit a statement of interest that indicates their year in school.
Preference is given to high school seniors; however, all high school students may apply. Those students who served on a board or commission in previous years will need to reapply. Students should anticipate actively participating on the board or commission and in the Leadership Academy; therefore, consideration should be given to the time commitment required.
The Leadership Academy will include a kickoff event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, as well as two check-in meetings – the first scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, and the second set for 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2022. Student Representative terms will end May 30, 2022.
Students in need of more information should contact Miranda Barfuss, Assistant to the City Council, at (630) 548-2983 or barfussm@naperville.il.us.
