- Naperville Seeks Community Input to Update Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan
~ Naperville, IL- The second and final stage of the North Aurora Road Improvement Project is set to commence the week of September 29, 2025. This phase of the project will focus on improving the Canadian National/Wisconsin Central Railroad bridge over North Aurora Road in collaboration with the Naperville Township Road District and the City of Aurora.
The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, aims to enhance safety and accessibility for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The agencies involved in this project have jurisdiction over different portions of this corridor.
The main objective of this phase is to replace the 110-year-old railroad bridge with a new structure that can accommodate five traffic lanes, a multi-use trail, and a sidewalk. Additionally, roadway lighting, a pump station for improved drainage at the underpass, and increased vertical clearance will also be added. The initial work will involve clearing land for pump station installation and constructing a temporary bridge to allow for continued rail traffic.

Most of the construction work will take place on the shoulder of the roadway with minimal impact on traffic. However, intermittent lane closures may be necessary depending on the nature of work being performed. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant for workers and changing traffic patterns. They are also encouraged to seek alternate routes when possible.
The North Aurora Road Improvement Project was initiated by an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Naperville, City of Aurora, and Naperville Township on April 18th, 2006. The aim was to reduce congestion and crashes while improving access for bicyclists and pedestrians. The project was divided into two phases- one focusing on widening the road and adding pedestrian and bicycle access while the other focused on replacing the aging railroad bridge.
The first phase was completed in 2023 in partnership with Naperville Township Road District. It involved widening the pavement between Fairway Drive and Frontenac Road to two lanes in each direction with a center turn lane, multi-use trail, sidewalk, sound wall, and lighting and drainage improvements.

The second phase of the project is estimated to cost around $52 million. So far, the City of Naperville, City of Aurora, and Naperville Township have spent approximately $6.5 million on easements, land acquisition, preliminary and design engineering, environmental services, and utility coordination. In addition to local funding, the project has received support from external sources such as the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).
In early spring 2026, a detour will be put in place to accommodate bridge removal and reconstruction as well as relocation of a large gas pipeline needed for the roadway widening. More information about the detour and its impact on traffic will be shared in advance.
