In September and October of this year, the City of Naperville fell victim to a rash of graffiti incidents in which an offender drew the word "SMILZ" in spray paint or paint marker on numerous buildings, fences, and electrical boxes around town. In all, there were close to 50 locations tagged, resulting in approximate cost of over $5,000 to remove and repair the damage caused by the graffiti.

Video surveillance of some of the impacted locations led to the identification of a suspect, who was located by police in late October in possession of the associated tools used for graffiti. After further investigation by the Naperville Police Department Investigations Division, that subject, Marcion Carrington, 18, of the 600 block of Station Blvd., Aurora, was arrested on Dec. 7, 2021 and charged with one felony count of Criminal Defacement to Property.
