~ As Halloween approaches, residents of Naperville are gearing up for a night of spooky fun. This year, the holiday falls on Thursday, Oct. 31, and the community is preparing for little goblins and ghosts to roam the streets in search of treats. While there is no official trick-or-treating hours designated by the city, the Naperville Police Department is offering some safety tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for all.
First and foremost, the police department urges residents to report any suspicious or criminal activity immediately by dialing 911. They also recommend that young children end their trick-or-treating when it begins to get dark, while older children should wrap up their festivities by 8 p.m. It is also advised that young children are always accompanied by a responsible adult and older kids should trick-or-treat with friends.
For those who choose to let their older children go trick-or-treating without supervision, it is important to create a map of a safe route in familiar areas. It is best to keep the activity within your own neighborhood and agree on a specific time for them to return home as well as pre-set check-in times. The police department also reminds parents to be aware of where registered sex offenders live in order to avoid placing their children in risky situations. This information can be found on the City of Naperville website.

In addition, it is important for children to remember basic safety rules such as looking both ways before crossing the street and using sidewalks instead of walking on the street. They should also avoid taking shortcuts through backyards, alleys or parks. Carrying a fully charged cell phone for quick communication and knowing how to call 911 in case of an emergency is also recommended.
Motorists are reminded to exercise extreme caution during popular trick-or-treating hours (4-8 p.m.) and avoid distractions while driving. With excited youngsters running around in costumes that may obstruct their vision, it is crucial for drivers to be alert and cautious. It is also important to refrain from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and to designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation options.
When it comes to costumes, the police department advises parents to make sure they are flame retardant and short in order to prevent trips, falls, and contact with flames. It is also recommended to avoid costumes that are overly scary or require any type of weapon. To ensure visibility in the dark, children should wear light-colored costumes or have reflective tape on their outfits. Glow sticks and flashlights are also fun ways to light the way.

Lastly, when it comes to treats, it is important for parents to inspect all candy in a well-lit place and discard any homemade or unwrapped treats. Children should only eat unopened candies and other treats that are still in their original wrappers.
With these safety tips in mind, residents of Naperville can look forward to a safe, fun, and festive Halloween night. The Naperville Police Department wishes everyone a happy Halloween!
