CHICAGO ~ Chicago's O'Hare International Airport is set to receive an additional $20 million in competitive grant funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Airport Terminal Program, announced Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) today. This brings the total amount awarded to the airport from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to $110 million over a three-year period.

Mayor Johnson expressed his gratitude for this investment in the city's largest economic engine, which not only employs tens of thousands of residents but also connects over 70 million travelers to Chicago and beyond each year. He credited the Biden-Harris Administration and the Illinois Congressional Delegation for their continued support, stating that together they are ensuring O'Hare remains a world-class airport that meets the needs of today's travelers while preparing for future growth.

The $20 million grant will specifically support renovations and improvements on the non-secure side of Terminal 5. This includes the construction of a pedestrian bridge connecting the terminal to a new parking garage, enclosing the terminal's Airport Transit System platform, improving passenger check-in space and circulation on both arrival and departure levels, as well as upgrading and reconfiguring security screening checkpoints on the departure level.

CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee emphasized that Terminal 5 serves as Chicago's gateway to the world, welcoming millions of passengers from all corners of the globe. She thanked Sen. Dick Durbin, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, and the entire Illinois Congressional delegation for their ongoing support, along with partners at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, and Transportation Security Administration.

This latest announcement builds upon previous funding received by O'Hare from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law's Airport Terminal Program totaling $90 million. These funds are currently being used for ElevateT3 project - a $300 million investment in upgrading customer amenities, improving security screening and airport operations, and enhancing accessibility for passengers with disabilities. In April, Mayor Johnson joined the CDA and members of the Illinois Congressional delegation to break ground on this development.

The planned upgrades for Terminal 5 were approved and authorized by the airport's 2018 Airline Use and Lease Agreement. They also build upon previous investments of $1.3 billion in recent years, including the renovation of ten gates in the terminal's western wing for Delta Air Lines in 2022 and the construction of a new 10-gate eastern extension that opened in 2023.

With this additional funding, O'Hare International Airport is well on its way to becoming an even more efficient, safe, and enjoyable travel destination for millions of passengers each year. The continued support from federal and local partners highlights the importance of investing in infrastructure to support economic growth and improve the overall travel experience.
