CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and city officials gathered today to break ground on a new housing development in North Lawndale. The project, led by developer Citizens Building a Better Community (CBBC), is the first of 115 market rate units planned for construction in the community as part of the Department of Planning and Development's (DPD) Missing Middle infill housing initiative.
The initiative aims to address the lack of medium-density housing in South and West Side communities due to years of disinvestment. By leveraging city land and financing, the strategy hopes to facilitate the construction of contemporary homes that are affordable for residents.
Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement for the project, stating, "Today we take another step forward in our mission to rapidly build new homes and invest in the neighborhoods where Chicago's families live, grow, and plant roots." He also highlighted how initiatives like Missing Middle are addressing disparities in access to homeownership and promoting equity within the city.

The $5.4 million project will transform seven vacant lots on South Trumbull and Homan Avenues and West Douglas Boulevard into homes that will be marketed to buyers earning up to 140% of the area's median income. This equates to $134,400 for a two-person household.
Through Mayor Johnson's $1.25 Housing and Economic Development Bond, developers are able to purchase city lots for just $1 and receive up to $150,000 per unit in funds. This allows them to create homes with purchase prices that align with market rates.
In addition to CBBC, four other minority-led developers - Alteza Group, Westside Community Group, Beauty for Ashes, and Sunshine Management - were selected through a DPD Request for Proposals process in January 2025. Together with CBBC, these five projects include 40 multi-unit buildings valued at over $37 million.
DPD Commissioner Ciere Boatright emphasized the speed at which this project is moving, stating, "Missing Middle is a fast-track repopulation and wealth-building strategy that's underway less than a year after developers were selected through the RFP." She also highlighted how this approach can revitalize neighborhoods and create opportunities for local buyers to build wealth.

A second round of selected proposals in Chatham, South Chicago, and Morgan Park will create 101 units across 31 buildings valued at $38.8 million. The city is also expecting to select developers for a third round of Missing Middle projects in McKinley Park, West Garfield Park, and East Garfield Park by the spring.
Mayor Johnson remains committed to delivering more affordable homes and projects that strengthen communities in North Lawndale and throughout Chicago. He has made it a priority to increase the diversity of housing options and make homeownership more attainable for working people.
