~ Naperville, IL- A residential fire broke out on Saturday, Feb. 28, causing extensive damage to a home and displacing six residents. The incident was reported to the Naperville Emergency Communication Center (ECC) at approximately 11:04 p.m. by a resident who stated that their vehicle inside the garage was on fire.
Upon receiving the report, the ECC immediately dispatched a general alarm assignment consisting of 10 pieces of fire apparatus and 24 personnel, including an Incident Commander and an Incident Safety Officer. The six residents who were home at the time were able to safely evacuate before the arrival of fire crews.
At 11:09 p.m., the first-arriving fire company reported heavy fire conditions in the garage, with rapid extension into the rest of the home. Firefighters quickly confirmed that all occupants were out of the house and began deploying multiple hose lines to slow down the advancing flames. Their efforts also focused on protecting unaffected areas of the structure and bringing the situation under control.

The intensity and spread of the fire required an extended firefight as crews encountered fully involved sections of the building and faced significant heat and smoke conditions throughout. After a prolonged suppression effort, firefighters were able to declare that they had gained control over the blaze at 12:37 a.m. However, they remained on scene for an additional hour to address any remaining hot spots and conduct overhaul operations.
Assisting in this emergency response were members of the Naperville Police Department, Lisle-Woodridge Fire District, and American Red Cross. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters. However, due to extensive damage caused by the fire, officials from Naperville's Transportation, Engineering, and Development team deemed that it was no longer safe for residents to inhabit their home.
The cause of this destructive blaze is still under investigation. Initial estimates suggest that it caused approximately $800,000 in damages. The displaced residents are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross as they work to find temporary housing. The Naperville Fire Department urges all residents to regularly check their smoke detectors and have a fire escape plan in place in case of emergencies.
