CHICAGO — Following pressure from the City of Chicago, Glock Inc. is reportedly set to discontinue the production of its existing pistol models and will launch new products purportedly designed to prevent semi-automatic conversion. The company's decision comes after a Cook County Circuit Court denied a motion filed by Glock to dismiss the City's lawsuit, which alleges the company knowingly manufactures products which can be illegally converted into semi-automatic weapons using devices known as "Glock switches."

"We know that Glock switches have been used in the vast majority of mass shooting incidents in our city. They have taken far too many lives and caused tremendous pain and suffering in our communities," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. "I'm proud that Chicago led the way in holding these gun manufacturers accountable. We will continue to use every tool at our disposal to end gun violence in Chicago."

"Glock's recently reported decision to discontinue its current models is an important step towards curbing the spread of illegal guns on our streets," said Corporation Counsel Mary B. Richardson-Lowry. "The City's lawsuit highlighted how Glock firearms could be easily modified with switches—small devices that convert semiautomatic pistols into fully automatic weapons.  This decision reflects the impact of sustained legal action and the urgent need for reform."

Glock will reportedly cease the manufacture and sale of its current models on November 30.

The City of Chicago led the charge in cracking down on these destructive devices as the first governmental body to file suit challenging Glock's practices. Following the City's first-of-its kind lawsuit, state's attorney's general in New Jersey, Minnesota, and Maryland filed similar suits and legislation was introduced at the state-level in Illinois and California.

From the beginning of 2021 through May 2024, when the lawsuit was first filed, over 1,300 converted Glocks were recovered in Chicago—an average of at least one recovery every day.

"This is a major step forward for the City of Chicago and other jurisdictions across the country that have been terrorized by these devices," said Deputy Mayor of Community Safety Garien Gatewood. "Pulling every possible lever, we will continue to address the root causes of gun violence as we work to ensure every Chicagoan can feel safe in their community."

The Department of Law will maintain its pursuit of injunctive relief and civil penalties for the harm caused by the proliferation of these weapons.
