CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Reaffirms City's Commitment to Protecting Immigrant Communities
In a recent shadow immigration hearing, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson joined Democratic Congressional leaders, led by U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, to discuss the damaging effects of militarized federal immigration enforcement in the city. The hearing was followed by a visit to Brighton Park, where the mayor met with residents and small business owners who have been negatively impacted by ICE operations.
Mayor Johnson expressed his strong stance against the Trump administration's attempts to intimidate working people, immigrants, and anyone who believes in democracy and justice. He stated that Chicago will not be silent and will continue to stand up for diversity and its immigrant communities.
During his visit to Brighton Park, Mayor Johnson emphasized the city's support for immigrant communities and its zero tolerance policy towards racial profiling, harassment, and fear-based tactics from the federal government. He was accompanied by Alderwoman Julia Ramirez (12th) and engaged with neighborhood leaders and representatives from the Southwest Side Rapid Response Team to better understand the impact of federal enforcement on targeted communities.

The mayor also visited local businesses in Brighton Park, where he witnessed firsthand the economic uncertainty caused by intensified ICE raids in the area. He distributed 'ICE Free Zone' signs that outline operational restrictions imposed on ICE through a Mayoral executive order. These signs serve as a reminder of Chicago's commitment to mitigating the impacts of federal enforcement.
In addition to Brighton Park, today's events in Lakeview and Lincoln Park serve as another example of federal agents exceeding their jurisdictional authority and terrorizing communities across Chicago. This comes after WGN-TV reported that 71% of those currently in ICE detention have no history of criminal convictions.
The Johnson administration continues to monitor federal immigration enforcement activity in Chicago and has made resources available for community preparedness at Chicago.gov/protect. Official 'ICE Free Zone' signs can also be picked up at City Hall in the City Clerk's Office.
Mayor Johnson's reaffirmation of Chicago's commitment to protecting immigrant communities sends a strong message of support and solidarity to those who have been negatively impacted by federal immigration enforcement. The city remains steadfast in its belief in democracy, justice, and diversity, and will not be intimidated by fear-based tactics.
