Chicago: O’Hare Marks Busiest Summer Ever, Surpassing Pre-Pandemic Peak For The Season

CHICAGO ~ Chicago's O'Hare International Airport has just wrapped up its busiest summer in its 70-year history, according to a press release from Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA). The CDA released air traffic data today, revealing that over 24.3 million passengers traveled through O'Hare during the months of June, July, and August. This surpasses the previous record set in 2019 by 1.2%, with August alone seeing over 8 million passengers.

Mayor Johnson expressed his pride in Chicago's status as a global transportation hub, stating, "Chicago continues to prove itself as the transportation hub of the world." He also commended the hard work of aviation professionals who keep travelers moving safely and efficiently every day, saying that their dedication embodies the spirit of excellence, service, and innovation that Chicago is known for.

CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray also highlighted the importance of continued investment in O'Hare's facilities and infrastructure to ensure it remains a world-class gateway for years to come. He thanked airline partners for their confidence in Chicago and their role in achieving this milestone.

This record-breaking summer at O'Hare reflects both strong local demand and robust connecting traffic. The airport saw new nonstop flights from Japan Airlines to Tokyo Narita and Avianca to San Salvador, El Salvador. American Airlines and United Airlines also added seasonal service to Halifax, while WestJet introduced new summer flights to Edmonton.

The trend of airline investment at O'Hare will continue through the end of the year. United Airlines will operate its busiest flight schedule from O'Hare this fall, expanding service to Phoenix, Austin, Orlando, as well as Caribbean and Latin American destinations such as Liberia (Costa Rica), Cozumel (Mexico), Saint Maarten, Guatemala City, Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), and San José del Cabo (Mexico). In November, United will also resume service to Tel Aviv, Israel with four weekly year-round flights.

American Airlines has also announced new service to Curacao, Guatemala City, Mexico City (Mexico), San Jose (Costa Rica), St. Croix, and St. Maarten, along with increased service to Aruba, Cancun (Mexico), Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands), Liberia (Costa Rica), Montego Bay (Jamaica), Nassau (Bahamas) and more. In late October, American will begin service to Honolulu. Additionally, ultra-low-cost carrier Arajet will launch year-round service from O'Hare to Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) in mid-November with three flights per week and convenient connections across the Caribbean and Latin America. VivaAerobus will also start new service between O'Hare and Mexico City's Felipe Ángeles International Airport.
