CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with MOPD Commissioner Rachel Arfa, will be commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at Malcolm X College today. The event, which is open to the public and free of charge, will take place at Malcolm X College located at 1900 West Jackson Boulevard.
The all-day program will honor community partners and recognize innovative employment programs in the greater Chicago area. It will also showcase visual and performing disabled artists. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the formation of the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, which was created shortly after the passage of the ADA in 1990.
Mayor Johnson expressed his pride in being a champion for the disability community and emphasized the importance of events like this in strengthening ties between communities and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens to thrive.
MOPD Commissioner Rachel Arfa echoed this sentiment, stating that it is now more important than ever to honor and protect disability rights, programs, and services that allow individuals to live independently and thrive in all 77 communities within Chicago.

The ceremony will begin with a panel discussion on youth disability employment featuring representatives from After 22, One Summer Chicago, and Project Wright Access. The afternoon program will include a dance performance by choreographer Maggie Bridger, improvisation and storytelling by the Tellin' Tales Theatre improv ensemble, and a musical performance by the Tommy Carroll Quartet. This program is supported by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).
MOPD is recognized as the largest municipal office dedicated to disability services in the nation. According to data collected by MOPD and the Chicago Department of Public Health's Healthy Chicago Survey, more than one in four Chicagoans have a disability.
The mission of MOPD is to ensure full participation and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities in all aspects of life. By inspiring positive change within Chicago, MOPD works to ensure that the rights of the disability community are fairly represented in all city services, initiatives, and policies.
