CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mourns and Fights for Justice 10 Years After Tragic Death of Laquan McDonald
Ten years ago, the city of Chicago was struck with grief as news of the tragic death of Laquan McDonald, a young son, brother, and friend, spread throughout the community. Today, as we remember Laquan and honor his memory, we are reminded that he deserved better from the city that he called home.
Despite the passage of a decade, the fight for equitable community safety continues in Chicago. In response to this tragedy, the city has taken significant steps towards creating a new ecosystem of police accountability. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was formed to ensure that allegations of police misconduct are independently and fairly investigated. Additionally, the city has committed to releasing footage from officer-involved shootings and other serious incidents within 60 days.

Driven by the passion and commitment of advocates and residents, Chicago has also established the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability. This commission aims to strengthen police accountability and build mutual trust between officers and residents.
Furthermore, in an effort to reform the Chicago Police Department and restore community trust in law enforcement, the city entered into a Consent Decree - a court order mandating changes to ensure constitutional and effective policing that keeps both community members and officers safe. The city is fully committed to prioritizing necessary investments in order to reach full compliance with this decree as quickly as possible.
The death of Laquan McDonald was undoubtedly one of the darkest moments in Chicago's history. However, out of this tragedy came transformation that is propelling us forward towards a better future. As we continue our work on bold reforms needed to achieve a stronger and safer Chicago, we keep Laquan's family in our hearts. Their resilience and courage continue to inspire us all.
