CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Johnson hosted a celebration in his ceremonial office today for the basketball teams of Hope Academy and Walter H. Dyett High School for the Arts, who both recently won state championships. The mayor also extended an invitation to DePaul College Prep, who will visit the office after their spring break.
According to Mayor Johnson, each team made history in their own way and brought pride to the city of Chicago. Hope Academy, representing the West Side of Chicago, won their first state championship in any sport in the school's history. DePaul Prep also made history by becoming one of only three teams in Illinois' high school basketball history to win three consecutive state titles. And Dyett High School, which was saved from closure after a 34-day hunger strike led by community resistance, showed perseverance and grit in winning their first state tournament appearance.
The celebration began at 12:30 p.m. with Mayor Johnson welcoming the players and coaching staff of Hope Academy and Dyett Arts. Both teams had impressive victories in their championship games - Hope Academy beat Eastland 71-38 while Dyett defeated Althoff Catholic High School 52-41.

DePaul Prep's win against Brother Rice was particularly noteworthy as it marked their third consecutive state title win. The Rams had previously won the Class 3A title in 2024 and the 2A title in 2023. This achievement puts them among an elite group of teams in Illinois high school basketball history.
Dyett High School's victory is also significant as they are the only Public League team to win statewide in this year's tournament. This is a testament to their determination and hard work, especially considering that just ten years ago they were facing closure under the previous administration.
During City Council last week, Mayor Johnson also recognized another local team - Kenwood girl's basketball team - for winning the state's 4A championship. He presented them with a proclamation, highlighting their impressive achievement.
Mayor Johnson has been a strong advocate for neighborhood schools, such as Dyett High School, which now operates as a Sustainable Community School. This innovative model, championed by the mayor, aims to provide support services for both the school and the surrounding community.
The celebration in the mayor's office was a testament to the hard work and dedication of these three championship-winning teams. Mayor Johnson expressed his pride in their accomplishments and praised them for making Chicago proud. As the city continues to face challenges, these teams serve as an inspiration and reminder of what can be achieved with perseverance and determination.
