~ Naperville, IL - A fourteen-year-old male juvenile from Naperville has been charged with possession of a loaded semiautomatic pistol, according to DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres.

The juvenile appeared at his detention hearing this morning in front of Judge Chantelle Porter, where he was ordered to be released on home detention with electronic monitoring. He is facing one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, a Class 4 Felony.

The incident occurred on June 14, 2025, at approximately 7:33 p.m. during a "teen takeover" event in Downtown Naperville. An officer from the Naperville Police Department was conducting additional patrols in the area of Washington Street and Jefferson Avenue when he allegedly observed the juvenile displaying suspicious behavior.

Upon making contact with the juvenile, the officer conducted a safety pat down and discovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun in the juvenile's waistband. The juvenile was immediately taken into custody.

State's Attorney Berlin expressed concern over the situation, stating that "the allegation that a fourteen-year-old boy was in possession of a loaded, semi-automatic handgun during an extremely crowded event in downtown Naperville is extremely disturbing." He also commended the vigilant policing and quick actions of the Naperville Police Department for removing an illegally possessed handgun from the streets and potentially preventing a tragedy.

Chief Arres echoed these sentiments, thanking his officers for their professionalism and vigilance which led to the arrest. He also reassured residents and visitors that there will continue to be a strong police presence in downtown Naperville and at special events to ensure safety. "We take our responsibility to keep this community safe very seriously," he stated.

The next court appearance for the juvenile is scheduled for June 27, 2025, in front of Judge Porter. It should be noted that these charges are only allegations and the juvenile is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The public is reminded that this complaint only contains charges and is not proof of the juvenile's guilt. It is the government's burden to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a fair trial.
