CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Board of Education have announced a transition plan that will see all current members leaving their positions later this month. This move comes as the city prepares for a shift to a hybrid elected and appointed Board in the future.

According to Mayor Johnson and the Board, this transition is necessary in order to lay a strong foundation for the upcoming changes and to best serve the interests of students and families in Chicago Public Schools. Together, they have achieved several objectives outlined in the Johnson Administration's vision for the city's public schools.

These accomplishments include moving away from inequitable student-based budgeting, implementing a new school safety model that does not rely on school resource officers, and focusing on Black Student Success. The partnership between Mayor Johnson and the Board has also led to improvements in special education services, increased accountability for charter schools during renewal processes, and the development of a new five-year strategic plan that prioritizes progress, investment in neighborhood schools, and expansion of the Sustainable Community School model instead of school closures.

None of the current Board members had planned to continue onto the hybrid Board, nor are any of them running for election. With an unprecedented increase in Board membership expected, transitioning new members now will give them time to orient themselves and gain valuable experience before additional elected and appointed members join in 2025. This proactive approach aims to ensure a smooth transition and continued success for Chicago's public schools.
