CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced the appointment of Era Patterson as the new leader of the Chicago Office of Public Safety Administration (OPSA). With over 15 years of experience in strategic legal initiatives and government operations, Patterson is well-equipped to take on this crucial role.

Patterson's impressive resume includes key leadership positions in both state and county government. Most recently, she served as Chief of Staff for the Cook County Public Defender's Office, one of the largest public defense agencies in the nation. In this role, she oversaw a budget of $100 million and managed a team of over 750 employees.

Mayor Johnson expressed his confidence in Patterson, stating, "With her vast experience working throughout the justice system, Era is perfectly suited to step into this critical role where she will help ensure every Chicagoan is safe and secure." He also commended her for her dedication to making Chicago the safest and most affordable big city in America.

Prior to her role at the Cook County Public Defender's Office, Patterson held various positions such as Deputy Director at the Illinois Justice Project, Chief of Staff for the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, Assistant Attorney General, and Associate General Counsel for Public Safety under former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. She has been instrumental in shaping criminal and juvenile justice policy in Illinois and has led significant legislative initiatives.

In addition to her impressive professional accomplishments, Patterson has also been recognized for her community service efforts. She was elected President of the Black Women Lawyers' Association (BWLA) after serving on its Board in multiple leadership roles. She is also an alumna of various leadership programs, including the University of Chicago's Civic Leadership Academy and the Chicago United for Equity Fellowship.

Patterson holds a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law and a B.A. in Political Science from Miami University. She is a licensed attorney admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Northern District of Illinois, and Illinois state courts. She has also shared her expertise as an adjunct professor at DePaul University College of Law.

This appointment is subject to confirmation by the City Council. If confirmed, Patterson will bring her extensive experience and dedication to public service to lead OPSA in its mission to ensure the safety and security of all Chicagoans.
