~ Naperville Police Department Joins Statewide Efforts to Keep Thanksgiving Travel Safe
As the holiday season approaches, the Naperville Police Department is teaming up with the Illinois State Police and local partners to ensure safe travels for all. From November 21st to December 2nd, officers will be enforcing the "Click It or Ticket" and "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaigns, targeting seat-belt violations, speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs.
According to Naperville Police Sgt. Eric Muska, Thanksgiving brings an increase in vehicles on the road, longer trips, and more festivities. He emphasizes the importance of wearing a seat belt as it remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to save lives in a crash. Sgt. Muska urges every driver and passenger to buckle up on every trip and make a plan for a sober ride before celebrating. He reminds those who choose to drink alcohol or use cannabis not to get behind the wheel.

To help individuals plan ahead for a safe ride home, here are some tips:
- Designate a sober driver before going out or use alternative transportation such as a taxi, public transit, or rideshare service.
- If hosting a gathering with alcohol, offer non-alcoholic beverages and assist guests in arranging sober transportation.
- Do not drive if you have used cannabis as its effects can be delayed and impair reaction time and judgment.
- If you spot an impaired driver on the road, pull over safely and call 911.
- Ensure that everyone in your vehicle wears a seat belt as it is your best defense against an impaired driver.
This Thanksgiving enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. It aligns with Illinois' statewide campaigns "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," "Click It or Ticket," and "It's Not a Game."
The Naperville Police Department and its partners are committed to keeping the roads safe this holiday season. They urge all drivers to follow these safety measures and help prevent accidents and tragedies on the road. Remember, buckle up, drive sober, and have a happy Thanksgiving.
