Naperville Police Participate in St. Patrick’s Day Traffic Safety Campaign

~ Naperville, IL- As St. Patrick's Day approaches, the Naperville Police Department is teaming up with the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to remind motorists that the Luck o' the Irish won't save them from the dangers of impaired driving. The stepped-up traffic safety campaign will run from March 13 to 6 a.m. on March 23.

According to NPD Traffic Sgt. Eric Muska, with St. Patrick's Day falling on a Tuesday this year, celebrations are expected to occur throughout the week and potentially on weekends before and after. In light of this, he urges everyone to celebrate responsibly and plan ahead for a sober ride home before leaving their house.

During this enforcement period, officers will be on the lookout for drivers who are impaired by alcohol, cannabis or other drugs. They will also be increasing seat belt enforcement, particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are typically lower. Additionally, all traffic laws will be strictly enforced including speeding and distracted driving.

- If you have a friend who is about to drive impaired, take their keys away and help them get a safe ride home.

- Always remember to buckle up.

Funding for this St. Patrick's Day "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Drive High. Get a DUI" enforcement campaign comes from federal traffic safety funds provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.
