NAPERVILLE, Ill. ~ Naperville, Illinois - The city of Naperville has announced that smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system will begin in several downtown neighborhoods starting the week of September 9. This testing is being conducted to identify any leaks or connections where stormwater may be entering the system. The process is expected to be completed by the end of October, barring any unforeseen circumstances or weather delays.
During smoke testing, a combination of air and non-toxic smoke will be forced into the sewer lines. This allows testing crews to easily identify any defects in the lines by observing where the smoke emerges from the ground. By identifying these issues, the city hopes to prevent costly and inconvenient sanitary sewer backups. Additionally, this process will also help locate any roof drains, patio drains, or footing drains that may be connected to the sewer system.

It is important to note that the smoke used during testing is completely harmless and creates no fire hazard. It also dissipates quickly and leaves no residue behind. However, individuals with respiratory issues may want to take extra precautions such as leaving the area for a few hours until testing is complete. It should also be noted that smoke will not enter buildings unless there are defective plumbing or dried-up drain traps present. During the test, it is normal for smoke to come out of sewer vent stacks on building roofs.
To ensure that residents are aware of when testing will occur in their area, door hanger cards will be posted at affected properties prior to testing. In addition, signs will be placed at intersections when crews are conducting tests nearby.
