Real-time detection, edge intelligence, and Samsung wearable alerts combine to help roadside crews respond faster to approaching hazards
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - illiNews -- SmartCone Technologies Inc. and Samsung today announced the launch of RoadDefender™, a real-time roadside worker protection system that delivers immediate alerts to crews in active traffic environments.
Roadside construction remains one of the most hazardous work environments, with workers exposed to fast-moving and unpredictable traffic. Traditional safety methods—such as cones, signage, and flagging—rely on driver awareness and worker reaction time, which can leave only seconds to respond to a vehicle breach.
RoadDefender addresses this gap with a connected, real-time alert system that detects approaching vehicles and instantly communicates risk directly to workers.
Real-Time Detection and Alerting
RoadDefender operates through a Sense–Decide–Alert loop:
The system has demonstrated long-range detection and alert delivery in milliseconds—significantly faster than traditional visual warning methods.

Built for Live Work Zones
Designed for active roadside operations, RoadDefender integrates into existing traffic control setups without complex infrastructure. The system includes ruggedized roadside units, visual beacon alerts, and real-time connectivity with wearable devices, enabling fast deployment in live environments.
Samsung Wearable Integration
Through collaboration with Samsung, alerts are delivered directly to workers using Galaxy wearable devices. Haptic, visual, and audible cues ensure warnings are received immediately, even in high-noise, high-distraction conditions.
Early Deployment and Validation
RoadDefender has been deployed in live work zones, with Ranger Construction serving as an early access partner.
"RoadDefender isn't just technology—it's a lifeline for our roadside crews," said Mark Ligon of Ranger Construction. "The timely warnings have made our job sites safer and more efficient."
Availability and Recognition
RoadDefender is currently being deployed across select construction and roadway projects through SmartCone and its partners. The system is listed on the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Approved Products List (APL) and has been recognized through the FDOT SWIFTT innovation program.
