MEXICO CITY - illiNews -- WHY CELEBRATE WORLD SLEEP DAY?
One of the biggest reasons to celebrate this day is to raise awareness about the importance of sleep and promote the prevention and treatment of sleep disorders. This initiative was started in 2008 by the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) and has since become a global campaign to promote healthy sleep.
A study published in the European Heart Journal in 2019 found that chronic lack of sleep has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, and stroke. This is because during sleep, the body carries out important processes such as tissue repair, regulation of blood pressure, and reduction of inflammation in the body, among others.
