NEW ORLEANS, June 3, 2025 ~ Chicago-based Exelon's president and CEO, Calvin Butler, has been elected as the new chair of the board for the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the national association of investor-owned electric companies. This announcement was made today during EEI's annual meeting in New Orleans.
Butler, along with David Campbell, chairman and CEO of Kansas City-based Evergy, and Chris Womack, chairman, president, and CEO of Atlanta-based Southern Company, were elected as vice chairs by EEI's Board. The position of chair rotates on an annual basis and Butler will succeed Maria Pope, president and CEO of Portland General Electric.
Interim President and CEO of EEI, Pat Vincent-Collawn expressed gratitude towards Pope for her strong leadership during her tenure as chair. He also praised her commitment to providing customers with safe, reliable and clean energy solutions. Vincent-Collawn also highlighted Pope's role in shaping a strategic roadmap for member companies that prioritizes customer affordability and her efforts in finding national solutions to mitigate risks from wildfires.

Vincent-Collawn also announced that Butler will serve as EEI Chair for the 2025-2026 cycle. With a rising demand for electricity and new technologies like artificial intelligence shaping America's energy future, Butler's leadership will be crucial in advancing shared policy priorities and delivering reliable electricity to power the nation's economy.
Butler expressed his excitement at being elected as chair during this pivotal time for the industry. He emphasized on meeting evolving customer needs while keeping their bills low. Butler previously served as an EEI vice chair before being elected as chair.
As president and CEO of Exelon - the parent company of six local energy companies including Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO, and Pepco - Butler oversees approximately 10.7 million electric and natural gas customers in New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.
Joining Evergy in January 2021 as president and CEO, David Campbell was later appointed as chairman and CEO in May 2024. Under his leadership, Evergy focuses on providing safe, affordable and reliable service to its 1.7 million electric customers in Kansas and Missouri.

Chris Womack, the chairman, president, and CEO of Southern Company - which serves 9 million electric and natural gas customers in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia - was also elected as a vice chair. Under Womack's leadership, Southern Company and its subsidiaries are leading producers of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy while also being innovators in the industry.
EEI represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies and provides safe and reliable electricity to nearly 250 million Americans across all 50 states and Washington D.C. The electric power industry supports over 7 million jobs in communities across the United States. In addition to its U.S. members, EEI also has over 70 international electric companies operating in more than 90 countries as International Members along with hundreds of industry suppliers and related organizations as Associate Members.
