CHICAGO - illiNews -- Chicago native Eddie Favela grew up with aguas frescas on every family table. Today, his bottled better-for-you version of the beloved Mexican drink, Vidagua, has sold more than 100,000 bottles in its first year in business.
Favela began developing the recipe in early 2024 in the back of his father's Chicago restaurant, producing upwards of 500 bottles a week while attending classes at DePaul University. Aguas frescas have been a staple of Mexican culture for centuries, but the high sugar content can deter those on a wellness journey. With no solution readily available, Favela combined natural ingredients with traditional flavors to create a shelf-stable version of his favorite drink.
"I've always been proud of my roots in Durango, Mexico, and naturally grew up drinking aguas frescas," he said. "As I grew up and learned more about health and nutrition, I knew I had to find a healthier way to make my childhood beverage."
Today, Vidagua can be found in more than 20 Pete's Fresh Market locations across Illinois, with additional distribution at Go Grocer, Carnicerias Jimenez and Sunset Foods. The brand is also a sponsor of the Angeles Investors (https://angelesinvestors.com/) network, joining a community dedicated to supporting Latino-led ventures.

"My family has been my biggest inspiration and support system from the very beginning," Favela said. "Watching my father build a life in the United States after immigrating from Mexico showed me what's possible with persistence and creativity. That foundation gave me the confidence to launch Vidagua."
With graduation from DePaul University in fall 2025, Favela plans to focus fully on expanding Vidagua.
"Our next steps include launching in two nationwide retailers by 2026," he said. "My mindset has always been that if you have an opportunity to do something, you should go ahead and do it. The first year has shown us what's possible, and we're just getting started."
From his roots in Chicago, Favela is sharing the flavors of Mexico and showing how the city's young entrepreneurs are shaping the national beverage market.
