CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor and Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs Speak Out Against Trump Administration's Cancellation of Grant Funding
In a recent press release, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Director of LGBTQ+ Affairs Antonio King expressed their strong opposition to the Trump administration's decision to cancel grant funding allocated to the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) for HIV prevention programs. The administration also cut millions of dollars in funds that support care accessibility at hospitals in Chicago and across Illinois.
Mayor Johnson stated that the sudden cancellation of funds will only worsen the public health challenges faced by the city, especially for working people and LGBTQ+ individuals who already face numerous barriers in accessing necessary care. He condemned the administration's actions as heartless and inhumane, driven by an extreme right-wing ideology.

The mayor further added that his administration will use all available resources to ensure that these funds are returned to the people of Chicago. This includes taking legal action against the Trump administration if necessary.
Director King echoed Mayor Johnson's sentiments, calling out the administration for its relentless attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. He stated that it is disturbing and shameful that the very people who are supposed to be protected under the Constitution are being targeted by this administration.
He also reassured members of the community that despite these setbacks, they will not back down from their commitment to providing support and standing against bigotry and oppression. Director King emphasized that they will continue to fight against an administration that has consistently attacked institutions serving LGBTQ+ individuals and undermined their quality of life.
The cancellation of grant funding has sparked outrage among many in Chicago, with concerns raised about how it will impact those who rely on these programs for essential care. As Mayor Johnson and Director King continue to speak out against this decision, it remains to be seen what actions will be taken by both local and federal authorities in response.
