CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with the Departments of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) and Environment (DOE), have announced a new initiative to provide free backyard compost bins to residents living in homes with four units or less. The Backyard Composting Bin Giveaway program aims to promote sustainability and reduce waste in the city.
Starting today, eligible residents can request a free compost bin through an online form. Once confirmed, City staff will deliver the bin directly to their homes. Each ward will receive an initial allocation of 20 bins to kick off the program.
Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement for this new program, stating that it is another step towards creating a greener Chicago. He believes that by providing residents with the tools for positive change in their own backyards, the city can make significant progress towards its climate action goals.
These compost bins allow residents to turn food scraps, fall leaves, and grass clippings into nutrient-rich compost through natural decomposition. Microbes break down organic matter in the presence of air and water, resulting in a dark, crumbly compost that can be used to nourish gardens.

This initiative is a significant move towards waste reduction efforts and promoting sustainability in Chicago. The free compost bins are available while supplies last, and if demand exceeds supply per ward, names will be added to a waiting list.
Commissioner Cole Stallard of DSS expressed his enthusiasm for this program as it provides another method for residents to compost materials from the waste stream. He also highlighted how this initiative complements the city's existing Blue Cart Recycling program and Food Scrap Drop-Off program.
Residents can participate in Chicago's Food Scrap Drop-Off Program by composting all food scraps, including meat, bones, dairy, and cooked foods. The collected food waste is processed at a commercial-scale facility that uses high temperatures to kill potential pathogens and break down materials quickly.
Angela Tovar, Chicago's Chief Sustainability Officer and DOE Commissioner, commended Mayor Johnson and DSS for their commitment to advancing the city's Climate Action Plan. She emphasized the importance of taking action against climate change, especially in light of recent extreme weather events.
