CHICAGO – Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson joined Alderwoman Michelle Harris (8th), Department of Housing (DOH) Commissioner Lissette Castañeda, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, members of the Trinity United Church of Christ community, neighborhood leaders, and Pullman residents for the ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly completed Imani Village Senior Residence. The City-backed project adds 70 new affordable homes to the Pullman area while providing independent living opportunities tailored to the needs of seniors. The project is part of the larger Imani Village project under development in the surrounding area.

"As we work to build up housing access throughout Chicago, we must remember that people deserve not just stable housing, but dignity and security in every facet of their lives," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. "Imani Village is a shining example of what we can deliver for Chicagoans through deliberate, community-driven investments. This development centers the needs of our seniors while ensuring they can remain connected to their families and neighbors."

"I'm thrilled to celebrate the opening of our new state-of-the-art, Imani Village Senior Residence, proudly developed by Trinity United Church of Christ, led by Pastor Otis Moss III and his Imani Village development team," said Ald. Michelle Harris. "This milestone reflects our shared commitment to safe, dignified, and affordable senior housing in the 8th Ward. Thanks to the leadership and collaboration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Housing, we are turning a vision into reality."

The five-story structure, at 9621 S. Cottage Grove Ave, includes a diverse mix of affordable housing options split between 60 one-bedroom units and 10 two-bedroom apartments. Eight units will be available at 15% of the area median income (AMI), eight will serve residents at 30% AMI, and 54 apartments will be available at 60% AMI. The project received $13.9 million in financing and capital support from DOH. Today's ribbon cutting is the latest milestone in Mayor Johnson's affordable housing agenda which has guided the City's ongoing work to confront the housing crisis by growing Chicago's housing stock and expanding accessible housing opportunities.

"Pullman is a culturally rich, historic neighborhood with a significant senior population, so it's crucial that they have the opportunity to age in place, independently, while being supported by a community of their peers," said Lissette Castañeda, Department of Housing Commissioner. "Imani Village is an excellent representation of what that can look like. Seniors often have fixed incomes and sometimes limited mobility, so they deserve housing specifically tailored to their needs."

Beyond creating new housing, Imani Village will benefit the entire Pullman community by generating jobs and economic activity while establishing a center for intergenerational living. Through partnerships with local health providers, faith-based groups, and social service organizations, residents will have access to comprehensive support and opportunities to remain engaged, active members of the community.

"The Imani Village Senior housing project establishes an eco-friendly and five-star accommodations for elders in our community," said Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ. "We celebrate this milestone of community collaboration, strategic planning, vision casting and sweat equity put forth by our Imani Village team."

The building meets the requirements of the Enterprise Green Certification, with space for rooftop solar installation, and will offer a variety of common areas designed to build community ties and belonging. The development includes 26 parking spaces.

Strategically located within the Cottage Grove commercial corridor, with proximity to the nearby 95th/Dan Ryan Red Line station, the project is accessible residents, community members and visitors from across the city.

The project was a joint venture between Trinity United Church of Christ, SPM Properties & Development, LLC and Trinity 95th & Cottage Grove Planned Community Development Series, LLC.

Imani Village Senior Residence is a facet of the Imani Village master plan, designed to be a fully sustainable urban community, which encompasses the surrounding 23-acre site owned by Trinity 95th.

The Senior Residence project created 149 construction jobs and met the City's requirement that at least half of all construction-worker hours be filled by Chicago residents. The development will provide three permanent on-site jobs.

In line with the City's commitment to equitable development, subcontracting exceeded goals of ensuring participation of 26% by minority-owned business enterprises and 6% by woman-owned business enterprises.

Mayor Johnson remains committed to delivering more affordable homes and projects which spark economic development in Pullman and communities across Chicago. Through his Build Better Together initiative, Mayor Johnson has put the construction of affordable homes at the center of his strategy to make Chicago more affordable for working people.

Mayor Johnson's landmark Green Social Housing ordinance made Chicago the first major city in the U.S. to implement the social housing model. Utilizing funds from Mayor Johnson's $1.25B Housing and Economic Development Bond, the City created a revolving loan fund operated by an independent non-profit designed to spur mixed-income housing development across the city.
