CHICAGO – Yesterday evening, the Cook County Circuit Court denied a motion to dismiss the City of Chicago's landmark lawsuit against Glock, Inc., its parent company, and two local gun retailers. The ruling marks a major legal victory for the City and affirms its right to pursue accountability under the Illinois Firearms Industry Responsibility Act.

Filed in July 2024, the lawsuit alleges that Glock knowingly manufactures and sells pistols that can be easily converted into illegal machine guns using a device known as a "Glock switch."

"We are extremely pleased that the Court denied Glock's motion to dismiss in its entirety. This ruling is a major step towards holding Glock accountable for endangering the residents of our city," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. "As of 2024, our police department has recovered over 1,300 converted Glocks in connection with a wide variety of crimes, including homicides, aggravated assaults, and carjackings. This administration remains committed to protecting Chicagoans from these terrifying weapons that have no place in our city, as part of our broader commitment to community safety."

"This is a critical first step forward in our fight to protect Chicagoans from the devastating impact of illegal machine guns," said Corporation Counsel Mary B. Richardson-Lowry.  "We look forward to presenting our case and holding Glock accountable for the harm their guns have caused in our communities."

"Today's decision sends a clear message: all gun industry actors will be held accountable for wrongful conduct that endangers communities, including the sale of semiautomatic pistols that can be easily converted into illegal machine guns," said Alla Lefkowitz, managing director of affirmative litigation at Everytown Law, counsel for Chicago. "We are steadfast in our fight to hold the defendants accountable for the dangerous corporate choices they have made at the expense of public safety and look forward to this case proceeding to discovery."

The City seeks injunctive relief, civil penalties, and damages for the harm caused by Glock's conduct. This ruling allows the case to move forward towards full accountability for the victims of gun violence at the hands of these dangerous weapons.
