CHICAGO ~ Chicago's O'Hare International Airport has reached a new milestone in its nearly 70-year history, welcoming a record-breaking number of passengers in the month of July 2025. According to air traffic data released by the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), over 8.26 million passengers passed through the airport's gates, surpassing the previous record set in July 2019.

Mayor Brandon Johnson and the CDA announced this achievement today, attributing it to a surge in summer travel. The average number of passengers per day in July was over 266,000, highlighting the airport's popularity among travelers.

In a statement, Mayor Johnson expressed his pride in Chicago being a top choice for both visitors and connecting flights. He also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of O'Hare's more than 46,000 employees who made this milestone possible.

CDA Commissioner Michael McMurray emphasized the importance of continued investment in terminal facilities to accommodate the growing number of passengers. He also thanked airline partners for their commitment to Chicago and their efforts to enhance the customer experience through the ORDNext program.

The first seven months of 2025 saw a total of over 48.3 million passengers at O'Hare, marking a 6.4% increase from the same period last year. In July alone, there were over 78,000 takeoffs and landings, representing a significant jump of 13.2% from July 2024. The total number of flight operations through July was over 485,000, up by 10.9% compared to last year.

This summer's record-breaking numbers were driven by both connecting travelers and those starting their journeys from Chicago itself. The busiest days for TSA screenings at O'Hare all occurred this summer, with August 4th setting an all-time high with over 117,871 passengers clearing security - likely due to Lollapalooza taking place in the city.

As O'Hare continues to see a steady increase in passenger traffic, the city and the CDA remain committed to strengthening the airport's dual-hub ecosystem, which has allowed American Airlines and United Airlines to thrive in the Chicago market. With its latest achievement, O'Hare solidifies its position as one of the world's top airports and a key player in global travel.
