CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and the City of Chicago have unveiled a new video animation showcasing The New Concourse D at O'Hare International Airport. The animation was revealed by Commissioner Michael McMurray during a speech at the City Club of Chicago.
The two-minute video provides a glimpse into the transformative new gateway that is currently under construction just south of Concourse C. This project is part of ORDNext, a larger initiative to revamp O'Hare's core terminals in order to better connect travelers, accommodate future growth, and enhance the passenger experience.
Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement for this new addition to O'Hare, stating that it will not only strengthen global connections but also create thousands of jobs and showcase Chicago's architectural excellence to travelers from around the world.
Designed by the Chicago-based firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in collaboration with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabrel Moreno Architects, and Arup, The New Concourse D will feature 19 flexible gates capable of accommodating both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. This will increase overall capacity while maximizing gate utilization.

Commissioner McMurray of the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) highlighted some key features of The New Concourse D during his speech. He described it as a multi-level space with zones for resting, dining, shopping, and play. Skylights will provide natural light throughout the concourse, creating an open and welcoming environment. At the south end of the concourse, there will be lounge seating and landscaping offering expansive views of the airfield.
SOM Design Partner Scott Duncan also shared his excitement for this project, stating that the design focuses on warm natural materials and open areas for passengers to enjoy while boarding their flights or arriving home to Chicago.
The construction for The New Concourse D began in 2025 with a budget of $1.3 billion. It is expected to be completed in late 2028. This project is a major milestone in ORDNext, which also includes The New Concourse E and the O'Hare Global Terminal, all connected by an underground tunnel system. This program aims to increase gate capacity by 14%, provide more flexibility for hub carriers, and offer more lounges and amenities while improving operational efficiency.
