~ DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres held a joint press conference today to announce that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the State's motion to deny pre-trial release for Christopher Hobson, a 38-year-old man from Chicago. Hobson is facing charges of Drug Induced Homicide, Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance, and Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance in connection with the death of a 33-year-old man from Naperville in February 2023.
According to the press release issued by the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, Hobson appeared in First Appearance Court this morning where he was formally charged with three counts of Drug Induced Homicide, one count of Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance (Class 2 Felony), and one count of Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance (Class 3 Felony). The charges stem from an incident that occurred on February 20, 2023, when the victim allegedly arranged to receive illegal narcotics from Hobson. The next day, the victim received the narcotics from an unidentified third party at the direction of Hobson. It is alleged that the victim ingested the drugs and subsequently passed away from a drug overdose.

The victim was found unresponsive in his home on February 22, 2023, and was pronounced deceased approximately twenty minutes later. During the investigation at the scene, authorities discovered numerous bags containing illegal narcotics. An autopsy performed on the victim determined that his cause of death was Combined Drug Intoxication - Fentanyl, Alprazolam, Phenobarbital, and Fluoxetine. It was also revealed that he had been prescribed Phenobarbital and Fluoxetine.
The Naperville Police Department conducted an investigation into the matter which led them to identify Hobson as the individual who allegedly supplied the fatal dose of fentanyl and alprazolam to the victim. On April 4, 2024, DuPage County Judge George Ford issued an arrest warrant for Hobson. He was taken into custody on July 17, 2024, in Chicago and returned to DuPage County to face the charges against him.
During the press conference, State's Attorney Berlin expressed his condolences to the victim's family and friends, stating that "the tragic death of the victim is yet another terrible reminder of the extreme danger illegal narcotics, particularly fentanyl, continue to be in our communities." He also emphasized that those who supply fatal narcotics will be identified, charged, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Chief Arres also spoke at the press conference, commending his department for their diligence and tenacity in this case. He also thanked the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Chicago Police Department Fugitive Apprehension Unit for their assistance in apprehending Hobson.
Hobson's next court appearance is scheduled for August 12, 2024, where he will be arraigned in front of Judge Margaret O'Connell. The public is reminded that Hobson is innocent until proven guilty and is entitled to a fair trial where it is the government's burden to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
In conclusion, this tragic case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of illegal narcotics and highlights the commitment of law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. The State's Attorney's Office urges anyone with information about illegal drug activity to come forward and report it.
