Naperville Police Arrest 9 and Issue Dozens of Citations During June 1 Event

~ On the evening of June 1, 2026, the downtown business district of Naperville was filled with large groups of mostly juveniles. These groups were mainly gathered along the Washington Street corridor between Chicago and Van Buren avenues. The Naperville Police Department quickly responded by deploying several teams of officers throughout the area to deter any potential criminal activity and ensure the safety of all visitors.

As the night progressed, some individuals chose to violate state laws and local ordinances. However, these unlawful acts were met with zero tolerance by the police teams, who swiftly made arrests and issued citations. By approximately 11 p.m., the crowds had been dispersed.

In total, nine individuals were arrested and almost three dozen citations were issued. Among those arrested were five juveniles who faced various charges. A 17-year-old male from Plainfield was arrested for battery and also received a citation for crossing a roadway outside of a crosswalk. Another 15-year-old male from Bloomington was arrested for obstructing identification and also received a citation for crossing a roadway outside of a crosswalk.

A 17-year-old male from Bolingbrook faced multiple charges including battery, assault, illegal possession of cannabis, and illegal possession of tobacco by a minor. Additionally, a 17-year-old male from Aurora was arrested for obstructing identification and criminal trespass to state supported land. Lastly, a 17-year-old male from Romeoville was arrested for disobeying a peace officer and interfering with a peace officer. He also received a citation for crossing a roadway outside of a crosswalk.

Four adult males were also arrested in connection with the event. Amaree J. Bivens, age 23 from Naperville, was taken into custody on four outstanding warrants as well as charges of obstructing a peace officer. He also received a citation for crossing a roadway outside of a crosswalk.

Sudais Oyekanmi, an 18-year-old from Aurora, was arrested for obstructing identification and also received a citation for crossing a roadway outside of a crosswalk. Marshun J. Smith, age 18 from Romeoville, was arrested for attempted aggravated assault on a peace officer and also received a citation for crossing a roadway outside of a crosswalk. Lastly, Tyler L. Sims, age 18 from Romeoville, was arrested for battery and obstructing a peace officer. He also received a citation for crossing a roadway outside of a crosswalk.

In response to the events of the evening, Police Chief Jason Arres stated, "We've been very clear on our stance. We want people to come to our city, patronize our businesses, and enjoy all the amenities Naperville has to offer. But if you break the law, there will be no warnings; there will be no second chances." He went on to thank the officers for their teamwork and professionalism, as well as other agencies that responded to assist with the situation.

Chief Arres also expressed his gratitude towards the community for their trust as they work to keep Naperville safe. He reminded both the public and news media that these charges are merely accusations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The Naperville Police Department urges everyone to follow the law and respect the safety of others while visiting their city. They will continue to take necessary actions to maintain order and ensure the well-being of all residents and visitors.
