ELMHURST, Ill., April 23, 2025 ~ A recent survey conducted by CAP Today, the official publication of the College of American Pathologists, has revealed that medical couriers have a significant impact on the work of lab professionals. The survey, sponsored by MedSpeed, found that 99% of lab professionals reported being impacted by medical couriers in a typical week, with 81% of those working in acute care labs stating that the impact was significant.
According to Jake Crampton, CEO of MedSpeed, these findings are consistent with a previous survey conducted in 2023 and highlight the importance of choosing the right logistics partner. "The impact of healthcare logistics on patient care cannot be underestimated, nor can the financial consequences," Crampton stated.
The survey received responses from 318 lab professionals and revealed some concerning statistics. 84% reported experiencing delays or errors caused by medical couriers in the last month alone, with an average of three incidents per month per respondent. Additionally, 56% of lab directors, managers and supervisors reported that a courier error had compromised an irreplaceable specimen in the past year.

The reliability of medical couriers also plays a role in decision-making for lab professionals. 83% stated that courier reliability affects their choice to partner with specialty or complementary labs for send out and referral testing.
The survey also shed light on how medical courier issues affect daily operations for lab professionals. Nearly half (48%) have had to stay late to wait for a courier to arrive, while 41% have had to request STAT service due to unreliable scheduled service. In some cases (36%), lab professionals have even taken it upon themselves to transport or ship specimens.
Crampton emphasized that these findings align with another recent survey from American Nurse Journal which found that 83% of nurses reported being negatively affected by medical courier issues on a weekly basis. In addition, over half (52%) stated that they had to reschedule or cancel procedures in the past year due to courier errors or delays.
Crampton believes that partnering with a top-tier logistics provider like MedSpeed, which boasts an error rate 1/20th of the industry average, can have a positive impact on patient care, clinical productivity, and avoid costly error remediation.
The anonymous survey was conducted by CAP Today from January 14 to January 22, 2025, on behalf of MedSpeed. The results highlight the crucial role that medical couriers play in the healthcare industry and the need for reliable and efficient logistics partners.
