MileagePlus members can now donate miles to support rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming satos through United's Miles on a Mission Platform
NEW YORK - illiNews -- Today, Animal Lighthouse Rescue announces that United Airlines MileagePlus members can now donate their miles to fly homeless dogs, known locally as "satos", from Puerto Rico to healthy lives and loving homes in the mainland United States. United chose Animal Lighthouse Rescue as one of the first campaigns for its brand-new Miles on a Mission crowdfunding platform. Through Miles on a Mission, MileagePlus members can use their miles for good and contribute to campaigns that help support communities in need.
Animal Lighthouse Rescue is aiming to raise 500,000 miles to support local rescue efforts, bring more dogs to the U.S. mainland and find them great homes. As there are more than half a million satos, these miles will help support Animal Lighthouse Rescue's broader mission of bettering satos' quality of life through pet care education, proper veterinary care and socialization, placement in loving foster and permanent homes, and organization of adoption events and volunteer opportunities. To help Animal Lighthouse Rescue reach this goal, United will match the first 50,000 miles earned for this campaign.

"Already this year, we have transported and successfully placed more than 100 satos – from puppies to elder dogs – in wonderful homes," said Harry Leff, Board Member, Animal Lighthouse Rescue. "With MileagePlus members' support, we can have a much greater impact on the lives and wellbeing of many more dogs and the people ready to open their hearts and homes to them. Miles on a Mission also will help us send volunteers to Puerto Rico to work with our local shelter and conduct rescue missions."
Miles on a Mission is a part of United's Every Action Counts pledge, which aims to connect people, unite the world and serve communities by putting people and planes to work for the greater good. Eligible charities can apply for the chance to launch a 28-day campaign to raise miles that help them deliver on their missions through travel.
"We want to make a difference in the communities where our customers and employees live, work and fly," said Sharon Grant, vice president and chief community engagement officer at United Airlines. "Miles on a Mission not only allows us to connect with even more organizations than before but also gives our customers a new way to use their miles in a way that supports the charities and causes that mean the most to them."
