CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with city officials and community partners, gathered today to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new development in West Humboldt Park. The project, known as the Humboldt Park Passive Living project, is part of the Mayor's Build Better Together initiative and aims to bring positive change to the area.

The four-story development will include two commercial spaces and a total of 60 affordable units. Thirteen of these units will be reserved for people with disabilities, including four for those with sensory impairments. This project is a result of both public and private investments, including $8.2 million from the Department of Housing, $7.1 million from the Department of Planning and Development, $18.7 million in Tax Increment Financing, and the conveyance of four City-owned parcels for a write down of $1 each.

Mayor Johnson expressed his excitement about the project, stating that it will provide community members with the resources they need to thrive. He also emphasized that this development is a step towards building "the safest and most affordable big city in America."

Department of Housing Commissioner Lissette Castañeda highlighted the economic impact that affordable housing can have on a neighborhood and expressed pride in supporting this project. She also mentioned that this development is part of their ongoing efforts to invest in quality and affordable housing across Chicago.

DPD Commissioner Ciere Boatright also spoke about the positive impact this project will have on the community. She noted that there has been over $100 million in new investments within a few miles of this development, which will help transform the area for the better.

Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) Commissioner Rachel Arfa emphasized their commitment to making Chicago an accessible and inclusive city for people with disabilities. She praised this project for adding 13 accessible units at HP Passive Living.

Alderman Emma Mitts from the 37th Ward expressed her gratitude towards Mayor Johnson for his efforts in bringing investments and developments to the area. She also highlighted the importance of this project in uplifting the entire community.

A.J. Patton, CEO of 548 Development, spoke about how this project aligns with the pillars of the Build Better Together initiative. He mentioned that it will provide quality housing for those at or below the median income of the area, reduce monthly utility costs for tenants, create jobs, and preserve the neighborhood's identity.

The project is being designed by Lamar Johnson Collaborative and developed by 548 Development. It is set to be the largest building in Chicago to incorporate Passive House Design standards. Principal and Design Leader at Lamar Johnson Collaborative, Elias Vavaroutsos, expressed their belief that design can be a tool for equity and resilience. He also mentioned that incorporating Passive House standards will set a new standard for sustainable development in Chicago.

The groundbreaking ceremony was a celebration of collaboration and progress towards creating a better community for all residents. With this transformative development, Mayor Johnson's vision of building a safer and more affordable city is one step closer to reality.
