CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has announced his selection for the 35th Ward aldermanic vacancy, choosing 8th District Cook County Commissioner Anthony Joel Quezada to fill the position. The decision was made after a thorough community engagement process led by the 35th Ward Civic Committee, which ultimately recommended Quezada to the Mayor.
In a statement, Mayor Johnson expressed his confidence in Quezada as a progressive leader who will effectively represent the values of the 35th Ward. He also thanked the Civic Committee for their recommendation and acknowledged all of the candidates who put themselves forward for consideration.
Quezada, a lifelong Chicagoan who grew up in Logan Square on the city's northwest side, has been actively involved in serving his community for over a decade. He has held various roles such as constituent service director for the 35th Ward aldermanic office, community organizer, and 35th Ward Democratic Committeeman.
Upon receiving news of his appointment, Quezada expressed his gratitude and commitment to representing the people of the 35th Ward. He emphasized his dedication to prioritizing working families, improving public services, and empowering neighbors.

As Cook County Commissioner for the 8th District, Quezada has already made significant contributions through legislative and budgetary initiatives aimed at improving residents' lives. These include introducing and passing Cook County's Paid Leave Ordinance, securing funds for infrastructure improvements on Fullerton Avenue through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), expanding dental health services across Cook County Health, and advocating for immigrants' rights and workers' rights.
Quezada's track record also includes serving on multiple committees as well as being Vice-Chair of both the Committee on Labor and Committee on Contract Compliance. In addition to his role as commissioner, he is also a member of the Board of Commissioners for the Forest Preserves of Cook County where he has been a strong advocate for environmental protections, renewable energy expansion, and increasing community access to the Forest Preserve system, the Chicago Botanic Garden, and Brookfield Zoo Chicago.

The Committee consisted of four esteemed community leaders with expertise in community advocacy, public service, and strong ties to the ward. Alderwoman Michelle Harris of the 8th Ward served as the chair of the Committee.
