CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Launches New Website to Protect Residents Amidst Federal Immigration Enforcement
Today, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced the launch of a new website, "Protecting Chicago," which aims to provide residents with streamlined information and centralized resources as part of the Mayor's Protecting Chicago Initiative. This initiative comes in response to the increasing federal immigration enforcement and is a part of the city's efforts to ensure that Chicagoans are well-informed about their rights and have access to necessary resources.
According to Mayor Johnson, "Chicago is developing a national model for cities resisting unconstitutional overreach by the federal government." He believes that this new website will serve as a one-stop-shop for information and resources that will help every Chicagoan know their rights. The Mayor also emphasized that these efforts are crucial in preserving public safety, due process rights, and positive civic engagement.
The Protecting Chicago website, available at chicago.gov/protect, centralizes community resources prepared by the Office of Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights (IMRR) and the Mayor's Office of Homelessness (MOH). It also includes information for those planning peaceful demonstrations in the city. The website offers Know Your Rights information in multiple languages such as Mandarin, French, Spanish, English, Haitian Creole, and Ukrainian.

Chief Homelessness Officer Sendy Soto stated that this initiative reaffirms the Mayor's commitment to providing support to every person experiencing homelessness in the city. She also mentioned that it builds upon the Mayor's Office of Homelessness' public-community readiness approach to ensure that people experiencing homelessness are aware of their rights and have access to necessary resources.
This announcement builds on the Mayor's expanded Know Your Rights campaign and IMRR's digital resources related to its Family Preparedness Campaign. These resources aim to provide immigrant, refugee, and mixed-status families with tools and guidance in case of family separation due to federal immigration enforcement.
Deputy Mayor for Immigrant and Refugee Rights Beatriz Ponce de Leon stated, "The Protecting Chicago website is another step forward towards ensuring that all Chicagoans, regardless of their immigration status, know and understand their rights." She emphasized the importance of providing every resident with the knowledge they need to be prepared and make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

In addition to resources prepared by the city, the website also compiles relevant resources developed by community groups and local partners.
