CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has unveiled the 2026 Summer Safety Strategy, a citywide initiative aimed at preventing violence, strengthening neighborhoods, and increasing access to resources. The strategy, announced today, is a comprehensive approach to community safety that focuses on accountability, long-term prevention, community investment, and collaboration with residents and organizations.
In preparation for Memorial Day weekend, the Johnson administration is reaffirming its commitment to keeping Chicagoans safe through coordinated community investment and engagement. According to Mayor Johnson, "Safety is built through presence, partnership, and investment in our neighborhoods. Community safety is not just about responding to harm—it's about preventing it before it happens."
The Summer Safety Strategy prioritizes root-cause investment and community-driven solutions. This includes providing direct access to city resources for residents and communities most impacted by violence, empowering residents and grassroots organizations to lead safety efforts in their own communities, and focusing on the overall social health and connectedness of Chicago's neighborhoods.

Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Andre emphasized the importance of building relationships in promoting true safety and accountability. "True safety is built on the presence of belonging," he said. "This summer, we are building on last year's successes by combining rigorous violence prevention with direct investments in community agency."
The City's efforts this year will build upon last year's successes by expanding cross-agency response and incident protocol alignment. There will also be increased coordination for teen trend response and engagement as well as integration of gender-based violence training with Community Violence Intervention and reentry efforts.
In addition to these initiatives, there will be visible activations such as wellness programming and community presence in priority neighborhoods through support for block clubs via the Community Activation Fund. The City also plans to strengthen hyper-local messaging and improve coordination of public information and narrative strategy.
