~ Naperville residents can expect some changes to their daily commute as the City of Naperville begins a major water main replacement project on Ogden Avenue and Washington Street. According to a press release from the city, motorists should anticipate lane reductions and increased travel times starting the week of May 18.

The project, which is expected to continue through October 2026, will involve replacing the aging water main on Ogden Avenue between Washington Street and Wright Street, as well as on Washington Street between Ogden Avenue and Bauer Road. This work is necessary as the existing cast iron water main pipe, installed in the 1950s and 1960s, has reached the end of its useful life.

The first phase of this project began in spring 2025 but was temporarily paused during the fall and winter months. However, crews will now resume work to replace the old water main with a new upsized 16" pipe in accordance with City standards. This will also include replacing water valves, hydrants, and services along the length of the water main.

A second phase of similar work is scheduled to begin in early summer on Ogden Avenue between Washington Street and Naper North High School. This phase aims to continue improvements made in the first phase and enhance system reliability. The city assures that additional details about this work and related traffic impacts will be shared in advance.

As work progresses, motorists can expect ongoing lane closures and traffic pattern changes. Crews will typically work from Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional extensions until 5 p.m. Motorists are advised to use caution, follow posted signage, exercise patience, and allow for extra travel time when passing through these areas. There may also be occasional disruptions to water service; however, residents will be notified proactively by crews.

This project is just one of several underway by Naperville Water Utility over the summer to replace aging water mains. These replacements aim to reduce water main breaks, increase water flow and service reliability, lower maintenance costs, and extend the life of the system. More information about these ongoing projects can be found on the city's website.
